Bellissima?

BMW Motorrad Motorsport prepares for Barcelona
Just over two months ago, BMW Motorrad marked its return to world championship motorcycle racing with a fantastic result at the historic Le Mans 24 hour race in France, ending with an ‘Open’ class victory and a highly impressive 16th overall on the modified R 1200 S sports boxer.
Next weekend, while motorcycle fans from around the world flock to Garmisch-Partenkirchen for a weekend of partying at the BMW Motorrad Days festival, factory team riders Thomas Hinterreiter, Rico Penzkofer, Marcus Barth and Richard Cooper will be in action several hundred kilometres away at the Barcelona 24 Hours endurance race at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain.
Although this is a non-championship event, there is no better way to develop a machine than actually racing it in competitive conditions. Therefore, BMW Motorrad Motorsport is very keen to use the significant amount of practice and the 24-hour race itself at Barcelona to test the modified R 1200 S against the world’s best endurance racing motorcycles.
“After a very successful start to our endurance project, we’re looking forwards to building on the early success we have enjoyed in this category of competition. We now want to underline the capability of the sports boxer in terms of racing, durability and – at least – we want to be the best twin in the event,” said head of motorsport Berti Hauser. “Regardless of the non-championship status of the race, it is great to have the opportunity to show the bike – especially to our Spanish fans – and furthermore, we are happy to have the opportunity to participate in four European 24-hour races.”
After BMW Motorrad Motorsport’s initial success at Le Mans, a significant number of developments and enhancements have been made to the sports boxer in preparation for the Barcelona round at the 4.7-km Circuit de Catalunya. The endurance racer now has a lighter rear brake; unsprung weight at the front has been reduced in the wheel and forks; improvements have been made to the quick-change system for the front and rear wheels; the gear box has been modified and the engine performance has been enhanced.
With its continuous development, the modified R 1200 S is already ‘light years’ away from the R 1100 S that motorsport fans first saw racing in the one-make BoxerCup series that supported the MotoGP World Championship. The idea behind the BoxerCup was to show just how fast you can really go on a sports touring BMW, but now the boxer concept has been taken to a whole new level, and the endurance racer has a chassis, performance and weight that just can’t be compared with the original R 1100 S.
In fact, when it comes to endurance racing, the R 1200 S even has several advantages over four-cylinder Japanese opposition. Due to the fact that the Boxer doesn’t have such extreme engine characteristics, this makes life a little easier for the riders – especially when it comes to racing through the night and during the early morning hours. And because of its more predicable power delivery, riders are a little more relaxed and tend to make fewer mistakes than their rivals on the track.
The Telelever front suspension comes into its own and offers a considerable advantage when it comes to braking deep into the corners. Due to the geometrical layout there is always a little suspension travel left in order to keep the front wheel on the ground. Conventional (telescopic) front forks sometimes ‘bottom out’ under heavy braking and leave the rider with no further suspension travel at the front wheel.
Interestingly, fuel consumption is lower on the sports boxer, which allows the team to ride longer stints out on the circuit. Regular four-cylinder bikes need to pit to refuel approximately every 50 minutes, whereas the R 1200 S only needs refilling after about one hour and 10 minutes. Calculated over a 24-hour period, this means that the BMW team will probably have around five stops less than the others.
Because there have been several changes made to BMW’s sports boxer since the Le Mans 24 Hours in April, the team are also partly using the Barcelona event as a test for the forthcoming Oschersleben endurance race, which takes place from 9-12 August. The consensus of opinion is that the Oschersleben round will probably be BMW Motorrad Motorsport’s most important race of the season. The German circuit’s layout favours the big twins and gives the four-cylinder bikes less of the kind of advantage that they enjoy at places such as the Circuit de Catalunya, with its endless start and finish straight and long back straight.
Therefore, the main target for the Barcelona race will be to finish and not to try too many “risky parts”, according to team member Andreas Ederer. “Barcelona is not one of the favourite circuits for bike races, because due to the many F1 tests they have throughout the winter months, the track usually is very bumpy. I heard that the track is supposed to have a new surface, but we’ll see how the conditions are once we are there.”
Endurance racing legend Stéphane Mertens would have been riding in this event for BMW Motorrad Motorsport, but he is still working on his recovery following a pre-season crash, so the team is hoping that he will be back on the bike for the Bol d’or in September. However, as the Barcelona 24 Hours is a non-championship event, having four (rather than three) sharing the riding duties is a big help. Instead of the usual two hours rest between the stints, each rider will be able to have up to three hours of rest or sleep, which is obviously a big advantage through the night. In this case, it will also really help the riders during the daytime too, because Barcelona at the beginning of July can be extremely hot!
“We will have a physiotherapist with us and depending on each rider’s condition they can have massages after each stint,” said Andreas. “Other than that, especially during the night they’ll be trying to catch as much sleep as they can. Furthermore we have medical support on our team, including a psychologist who is specialised in racing activities. That is an obvious advantage, because we have developed routines that work very well in order to keep a rider’s concentration as sharp as possible, allowing them to focus on the job that has to be done out on the circuit”.
The ‘24 Hores de Motociclisme’ race starts on Saturday 7 July at 3 pm at the Circuit de Catalunya and will finish at the same time on the Sunday afternoon.
