You know the risk when you go. So if they want to make it safe, stop the race. You sign a release that says you can die, what more do you need. The guys die cause they ride too fast, or have an accident.

The problem is that they are making navigation too easy and the riders chase each other to the front and then follow. There are no good navigators any more, just a bunch of guys racing to the front. Before you had to pay attention to the road book so you could follow the course and that would keep the speed down. If you followed a good guy, they would drop you by going the wrong way or some other way, now the rules make that impossible and few of the riders are good enough to do this any more.

There are a lot of problems with the current regulations and the organisation trying to get the entries up and make a good TV show out of the race without killing anyone. I have some good ideas on how they could fix it but no matter what if riders are willing to take risks, there will be death and injury.

The speed nor the gas tank size will fix it, in fact I think it will make it worse really. Riders will try and make up time on the really rough and dangerous sections. And the reg for starting the fastest from the back only means more crashing in the dust.
Too bad Hubert Auriol got a job as a TV host. He understood the race and the risk.

The first time I rode the Dakar I said I'd never race a twin, but after riding one, I wouldn't want to do it on any other bike. It is what they are made for, but you can't limit the speed, it is what they do. You just have to know how to use it. My Twin didn't kill me, in fact I thought riding it was safer, because I respected it.
