Latest News BMW K 1200 R wins Bandon Drag Race 2006
The sleepy town of Bandon in the south of Ireland awakens once a year to the sound of motorcycling madness in the form of the Bandon Drag Race. The event is organised by the West Cork Motorcycle Club and is one of Ireland's longest standing race events. In recent years the GSX-R range from Suzuki has been the dominant force but at this year's event, it was a BMW K 1200 R that grabbed all the headlines.
BMW Motorrad's naked roadster won the 'V2 Motorcycles - Class F' category, taking the honours from a host of Japanese 'hypersports' and 'supersports' machinery. The times it set over the eighth mile (201 metres) sprint were consistently under seven seconds - with a best time of 6.68 seconds, compared to the second-place finisher's best time of 6.84 seconds on a new GSX-R1000.
Event organisers were so impressed with the road-legal, ex-Power Cup machine that they believe it would have even been competitive in the Turbo and Supercharged class that is reserved for non road-going bikes.
As it was, the K 1200 R dispensed with GSX-R1300s and 1000s; Kawasaki ZX-12Rs and ZX-9Rs; Yamaha R1s; and Honda's X11 and Blackbird models. The motorcycle in question is owned by BMW Group Ireland and was ridden to victory by local man Alan O'Connor who works in the Keary's Motorrad dealership in Cork as a motorcycle and Rider Equipment specialist.
Alan commented that: "During scrutineering there were a lot of smiles from competitors because we were competing on a shaft drive motorcycle but after they saw our first run there was a scramble for sprockets in the pits as it was immediately clear that the K 1200 R was going to be the bike to beat. I was massively impressed with the ability of the K 1200 R to launch off the line every time with minimum lift while everyone else was fighting to go forwards instead of upwards!"
Alan has already made a request for BMW Group Ireland to enter the bike in another event later this year to show that the victory can be repeated. "The word is out there now so we may even have competition from other BMW bikes in future as the high power output, shaft drive and suspension set-up are obviously ideal for this type of event".
The next stop is a 'quarter mile' event and we will keep you informed. In the meantime the sleepy town of Bandon has dozed off again. Will it be awakened next year by the roar of many BMW K 1200 R riders, all determined to taste victory in this popular annual event…
a parlarne male sono solo quelli che non la conoscono e che dicono di conoscerla
Ne parlano male anche quelli che non ce l'hanno! KS e KR per me pari sono in quanto a bellezza, motore e faciltà di guida.
NON C'E' MOTO PIù BELLA (in my opinion)
