Ho avuto l'ispirazione di chiedere personalmente al titolare del sito indicato (merci beaucoup) da Mad Mat - sapendo che Android è usato anche nel mondo smartphones... segue il botta-risposta:

This would be technically feasible using a modern smartphone with
android 4.0 and a special USB OTG cable. On older platforms, which do
not allow complete control of the USB port, it would only be possible
through some custom-made hardware to interface with the forerunner.
It's an interesting project, but it's not something I'm going to work
on (the niche is too small). Overall, you'd be better off with a
different device. My edge 500, for instance, is lighter than the my
forerunner 305 and can store way more data..."
