Questa mattina aprendo la posta elettronica ho trovato con gioia l'email che allego qui sotto e che ci da la spiegazione delle sigle delle moto serie BMW. In parte già leggento tra i vari post qualcuno c'aveva beccato..... Buona lettura (è in inglese)....
Thank you for your email.
It's not that easy to explain the letters for the BMW motorcycles, because there is no general rule for that. The letter "R" was first used for the
1923 BMW R 32. In this combination it is used for "Rad" (wheel, a short form of "Kraftrad" which means motorcycle in german).
The letter K came much later and at this time we believe that only a few people knew the original meaning of the "R". Therefore the "K" came from an internal code for the flat lying inline engined models. There is no direct meaning for this letter.
The "F" is even younger and is derived from the word "Funduro". It is a combination of the words "Fun" and "Enduro" which describes the designer's intentions for the F 650 very well.
We hope this is helpful for you.
Yours sincerely,
BMW Mobile Tradition
