FZ1
While the baggy jeans crowd is drooling over the radical new R6, sport-riding bodies that were around during the disco craze will be gushing over the new FZ1. The previous version was fast and versatile, but harsh critics wondered why Yamaha saddled it with a steel frame and carburetors instead of the alloy frame and injectors from the R1 that loaned its engine architecture to the FZ1.
For 2006, those whiners will be silenced. The FZ1's new engine is derived from the 2004-05 R1, presumably tuned for torque, and it now includes electronic fuel injection. The more powerful motor resides inside an aluminum twin-spar frame that is matched out back by a Controlled-Fill cast-aluminum swingarm. It adds up to a 9-pound weight reduction, according to Yamaha's early specs.
Also upgraded is the front suspension, changing from a conventional fork to a stiffer inverted design. Rake angle has been reduced by a full degree for sharper steering, although an additional 0.2-inch of trail and 0.4-inch of wheelbase buys back some stability. Overall height has increased a half inch, while its seat height of 32.1 inches is slightly lower.
The previous FZ1 was attractive if a bit staid, but this new Fizzer looks much more contemporary. Its twin headlight face is familiar, yet the rest of it is a fresh take on Yammie's big naked bike. Noteworthy aspects of its design are its black perimeter frame, humpback fuel tank, smart-looking tailsection and, last but not least, its stylized oval-shaped muffler that is sure to cause some controversy.
The old FZ retailed for a very reasonable $8599, so we predict this new version to be priced somewhere north of $9000.
