Audi announces the road-legal results of their endurance racing program
Audi has announced that they will be fitting the first diesel V12 into a series production car, in a new version of the Q7 SUV. Based on the engine fitted to the Le Mans-winning R10, the new motor features the revolutionary alloy crank case, unusual 60 degree V-angle and the 2,000 bar common-rail system that made the Audi oil-burner a race winner.
Although much of the technology has already been used in previous Audi TDI engines, such as the tri-element cylinder heads, Audi's existing TDI units were used as a basis for the race engineers. Audi claim that all they learned during the development of the Le Mans car has been (as far as possible) transferred back across to the road-legal powerplant, such as the cracked conrods, forged pistons and, crucially, the alloy crankcase. The road-going V12 has a larger capacity than the race engine, up to 6.0 liters from 5.5 liters, although this is common practice: both the Ferrari F40 and Porsche Carrera GT motors were given greater displacements when they were altered for road use.
The result of the race-bred technology is 500 bhp and 1,000 Nm of torque (available from just 1,750 rpm) and, thanks to the Piezzo injectors and Bosch common-rail system, a fuel consumption figure of just 11.9 liters per 100 km.
