BMW Motorrad's K 1200 R has recently shown further proof of its sporting intent with a great performance in the 'Road to Suzuka 8 Hours' 300km endurance race at the Suzuka circuit in Japan last Sunday (11 June). The annual event is the precursor to the legendary Suzuka Eight-Hour race and all the teams that will be challenging for honours at the annual eight-hour endurance race were in attendance.

The BMW Motorrad-supported Japanese Tras & PIAA Racing Team entered a race-prepared K 1200 R in the XX-Formula category with riders Toda and Nakai. Out of 68 bikes, the Tras & PIAA Racing team took 45th position in the overall ranking and won in XX-F Div. 2 class on the K 1200 R Power Cup bike. The XX-F Div. 2 class is one of the toughest classes to contest and in the past five years, there has been only one bike that has qualified for the actual Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance race from this class. Because only minimum modifications are allowed in this class, the bike is almost identical to the street version.
After a difficult qualifying session the BMW Motorrad team started the race with Toda aboard in 57th position. The Japanese rider managed to move up five places straight from the start. By the time Nakai took over after 23 laps the team were in 54th place overall (against a field of 66 bikes - most of which were highly competitive Superbikes). As the K 1200 R crossed the line with a total time of 2:02.41.598 seconds, Nakai had put the BMW in 45th overall and the clear winner in its class.
