Situation

On account of a bug in the control-unit software of the BMS-K, the countdown value stored in memory for the residual distance is reset to the initial value when the unit is programmed with CIP (up to CIP CD5.1), or when the adaptation values are reset (up to Diagnostics CD17.0).

Consequently, the countdown value for residual distance read from memory is no longer correct, with the result that the engine can run up an unacceptably high mileage before the next valve-clearance check is undertaken.

The outcome can be damage to the valve gear on account of incorrect valve clearances.

Series solution

The K40 and K43 motorcycles manufactured as of week 50/05 have debugged control-unit software in the BMS-K.

After-sales solution

Please check the motorcycles on the occasion of their next visit to the workshop, using CIP (CIP CD6.0 or higher) to check whether the software of the BMS-K requires an update, and update the software as necessary. Once the latest software has been loaded, the GT1 will show the correct countdown value for the residual distance (with Diagnostics CD18.0 + Update for Diagnostic CD18.0. This update for CD18.0 will be sent to your dealership via spare parts channels 03/27/2006.

This latest software update also includes the following measures:

● Improved on-throttle/off-throttle change damping

● Smoother pickup on transition from off-throttle run-on

● Reduced warm-up idle speed

Note

Bear in mind that if the odometer shows a reading in excess of 20,000km and the valve clearances have not yet been checked, the motorcycle has to be checked accordingly and the valve clearances set if necessary.
