RECALL: Oil Tank Ventilation

I just saw the details of the latest recall on K1200S/R/GT/R-Sport motorcycles.

Details of the Recall:

Frequent short-trip usage, particularly at low ambient temperatures, causes condensation to form in the oil tank, increasing the proportion of water in the engine oil. The water vapor condenses at the outlet port of the oil-tank breather and if temperatures are below 0°C (32° F), adverse circumstances can combine to cause this water vapor/condensation to freeze and potential close off the breather line of the oil tank.

The dry-sump lubrication configuration means that the suction pump's oil delivery rate is higher than that of the delivery pump, so the overpressure produced in the system in this way can cause the oil tank to rupture, allowing oil to escape onto the rear wheel of the motorcycle.

Motorcycles Effected by this Recall:

In order to determine if a specific motorcycle is affected by this Recall Campaign, it will be necessary to verify all motorcycle VINs through a DCS Vehicle History Check. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the repair or take no further action.

The VIN Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered a deciding factor.

Solution Information:

A new cap is now being fitted to the oil tank that incorporates a valve that prevents pressure inside the tank from increasing to an impermissible level. The cross-section of the breather is larger.

Replace the cap of the oil tank with the new cap with integrated relieve valve. If a K 1200 S or K1200 R motorcycle does not have an opening for the dipstick in the oil strainer of the oil tank, cut the oil dipstick just below the cap to enable the cap to be installed.

Current customers on record will be notified by mail of the existing concern and will asked to bring their motorcycle to an authorized BMW motorcycle center for the applicable retrofits.

Motorcycles in dealer inventory must be retrofitted with the updated oil tank cap prior to delivery to the customer.
